Last month Kimberly and I had the privilege of meeting an amazing mother of four and author, Heather Porter. She recently wrote her first book Body Back: The Mother’s Handbook to Medical, Physical and Emotional Well-Being. Sharing fifteen years of personal as well professionals experiences from various fields of expertise and some fun celebrity commentary, Body Back is a great go-to women’s resource (not just for mom’s)  for living and maintaining a healthy and well-balanced life.

I often find myself  flipping through this book to unwind from a busy day and to learn about new ways to take care of myself.  I keep this book on my nightstand and enjoy my quiet time reading it before bed or sometimes while sitting outside watching the kids play in the afternoons. It’s easy to read through and feels therapeutic as well. I learn something new each time I pick it up, get inspired to live healthier and remember to not let the woman behind the mom fade away. Body Back reads like a cross between an encyclopedia and a self-help guide. From hair-loss to the sadly changed mid-line to “mommy brain,” Heather covers it all! It’s time I am not last in line for some TLC!

“I looked for a book that would have everything in it but found you’d need to buy about 30 books to learn everything — one on yoga, one on psychology, relationships, food, exercise, etc.”

Heather’s third pregnancy was during her thirties and she felt concerned about how she was going to get her “body back” after she delivered the baby. So, she made herself the guinea-pig for diets, remedies and treatments. She compiled a diary of notes from her experiences in which she referred to as a “Bridget Jones” type diary.  Heather juggled her days as a busy “mum” and aspiring author, determined to find and compile the answers so many women search for in one book. Thanks to Heather’s journey and countless hours documenting her personal trial and errors, many women such as myself can benefit from this book!

”Stand tall, feel feminine. You are more than the children’s taxi driver, wife of, daughter of, sister of, in-law of, mother of, neighbor of, friend of. One of the most important possessions to get back after having children is your self-confidence and feeling like a women again. Health follows suit and a striking figure means nothing if you are lost inside it.” – Heather Porter

  1. Megan says:

I love that it is about aim but speaks to you as a woman! I get stressed when it’s mom day in and out and don’t see myself otherwise.

  2. Kristina says:

It’s crazy that I came across this article today because my mom was just talking to me about how I need to take of myself sometimes! Now that I’m a mom I feel guilty if I spend a dime on myself and I feel like I forgot how to be just me. I’m a mom 24/7, and a student when I am in class but that’s about it. This book looks like it would be refreshing to read! Thanks Kristal for the review. :)
